- George studied for the ministry at the University and King's College at Aberdeen, where he earned his degree on 30 Apr 1755. He was soon appointed teacher in George Heriot's Hospital in Edinburgh.
On 27 Jun 1757, he was chosen assistant master of the Grammar School in Campbeltown, Argyleshire, where he remained for two years.
He later studied theology at the University of Edinburgh and was licensed by the Presbytery of Kintyre on 29 Apr 1761. He was appointed assistant to the Rev. Charles Stewart, minister of the First Charge, Campbeltown, and was ordainedto the Second Charge on 27 Jel 1763.
He received the degree of D.D. from the Uiversity of Galsgow in Nov 1795.
He was married and had children.
