Notes |
- Alexander and Margaret "Peggy" were betrothed in Scotland, but Margaret's father sent her to America to the home of Rev. James Keith in Fairfax County, Virginia. Shortly after, in about 1746-7, Alexander followed her to Virginia and they were married by Rev. James Keith in his home.
Margaret's father left a legacy to her and her descendants which was to come to them in annuities "as long as water runs or grass grows". Margaret and Alexander gave a power of attourney to Rev. James Keith to draw the annuity for them. In 1751, Rev. Keith drew one or two years of the annuity and gave it to Margaret and Alexander in silver and gold. Later, as Margaret was at her spring washing clothes, she noticed the house on fire. The fire consumed all their belongings including her papers. The money was never found, so it is believed that the house was burned to cover the theft of the money.
Alexander felt that if his house had to be burned on account of the money drawn by his wife from her father's estate, then he would not have anything more to do with it. After that, she was never able to get anyone to attend to it for her, but she hoped that some of her descendants would have energy enough to attend to it after she was gone.
In about 1752, they bought a farm in Carters Run Valley about five miles west of Warrenton in Farquier County, Virginia. They both lived there for the rest of their lives and were buried on the farm land.
After Alexander's death, in about 1804-08, Margaret gave a power of attorney to her grandson, Dr. John Monroe, Jr., to go to Scotland and attempt to resume the annuity payments.
Some researchers say that Alexander was the son of Col. William Gent Monroe, Jr. and Margaret Triplett. But this seems unlikely since Alexander was born 10 years before they were married and he was born in Scotland even though his father lived all his life in America.
