- John and Rosa were second cousins. Their marriage was performed by John's father, Rev. Dr. William Balthrop Edwards, of Baltimore, Maryland, in the Union Methodist Church at Shiloh, Virginia on 15 Oct 1857.
John's mother was Elizabeth Alexander Sommerville, who's father, Captain William Sommerville, fought in the American Revolutionary War.
John fought in the 15th Virginia Cavalry in the American Civil War. He was wounded at the Battle of Brandy Station in Culpepper, Virginia and died of those wounds in an Army Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
