The following is from the Johnson reference:

Joseph was a bachelor and obviously one who provoked trouble since he was killed at the age of 27. "Tip" is buried in Alexandria, Virginia on the edge of the Methodist Protestant Cemetery - actually to the left of the gates to the National Cemetery. An item from the local paper, later the Alexandria Gazette, reads as follows:

    LOCAL ITEMS

HOMICIDE-Yesterday morning about 11 o'clock, Jos. E. Monroe and Wm. Howard, who had fought on the 8th inst., when Howard was severely beaten by Monroe, met in the road leading from the Little River Turnpike to the Theological Seminary, about half a mile from Padgett's toll-gate, and renewed the fight, and while both were down, Monroe who was on top, was shot through the heart by a ball from a pistol in the hands of Howard, and expired in less than five minutes.

A coroner's jury was summoned, and the evidence elicited was to the following effect, viz: That a warrent had been obtained by Howard against Monroe, for the beating on the 8th inst. and that yesterday was the day set for the trial. Both the parties met at Catt's Hotel, West End, where the trial was to have taken place before Justice Padgett: but Monroe objecting to having Padgett sit on the case, Justice Daniel Kincheloe, who happened to be present, was proposed, but was objected to by Howard, when Justice Kincheloe continued the case, and Howard left for home; and Monroe, by taking another road, got into the road that Howard was traveling and waited for him, and on his approach, pulled him off his horse and got him down, and while down, Howard discharged three barrels of a revolver at him, one only taking effect near the heart, killing him in a few minutes.

Two young men who witnessed the affray, each named Howard, gave the evidence upon which the jury rendered the following verdict: That Joseph E. Monroe came to his death by a ball from a pistol in the hands of William Howard, which, in our opinion, was used in self defence.

The body of the deceased was brought to the residence of his brother, Harrison L. Monroe, in this city, from whence the funeral will take place this morning.

Howard gave himself up to authorities, but on the rendition of the above verdict, was discharged.

Obituary notice: In memory of Joseph E. Monroe of Loudoun County, Virginia, late of Alexandria, Virginia, who departed this life 28 Mar 1860, in teh 27th year of his age.

The Alexandria Gazette of 31 Mar 1860: "Re-arrested Wm. Howard who killed Joseph E. Monroe at West End on Wed. last and discharged by the corner was re-arrested Thursday last taken to Fairfax Court House to await examination.

    Notes:

William served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In order to secure his pension, he requested his neighbor, General John C. Hunter, to certify his service. General Hunter's letter confirmed his service and also mentioned that William had raised eight children.

In 1850, William was a farmer with $3500 in property living with his family in Washington, Ohio.

It is quite possible that this record is a composite of two individuals. Guilford says William was born about 1776.
